Trashiyangtse

Description

Bordering the north-east Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, Trashiyangtse as district was created in 1992. With area of 1437.8 Sq. Km and elevation ranging from about 500 to 5400 meters, its climate varies from sub-tropical in the south to alpine temperatures in the north. Trashiyangtse is also known for its rich biological diversity with its Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary well known as winter habitat and roosting place of Black-Necked Crane, a highly endangered species of bird in the world. This region is also famous for the production of traditional handicrafts like wooden bowl (‘Dapa’), Daphne paper (‘Desho’) and the growth of Cordyceps at the pastoral areas.

    Trashiyangtse Dzong

    Trashiyangtse Dzong meaning ‘Fortress of Auspicious Fortune’ was originally built in 15th century on a steep ridge rising from the confluence of Dongdi Chhu and Kholong chhu rivers while later renovated in 1975 & again in 2005 and sanctified in a sacred consecration ceremony. The utse’s main relic is a statue of Chuchizey (Avaloketshvara) and the other relics include a statue of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, Guru Padmasambhava, Lord Budhha.

    Chorten Kora

    This dazzling white stupa, a significant pilgrimage site in eastern Bhutan, is situated on the riverbank below the Trashiyangtse town. Built over a period of 12 years around 1740 by Lama Ngawang Loday, it is said to be modelled after the Boudhanath stupa in Nepal, with eyes painted at four cardinal points. It is also believed that a Dakini girl was sealed alive of her own free will, inside the stupa as an offering from the Dakpa people of Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh (India). Bhutanese people celebrate Drukpa Chenga Kora, also known as Chorten Kora on 30th of the 1st month of the lunar calendar, where locals circumambulate the stupa.

    National Institute of Zorig Chusum

    This Art & Craft Institute was opened in 1997 to provide vocational training opportunity to young students. Ten of the Zorig Chusum (Thirteen Arts & Crafts) are taught here including Thangkha painting, embroidery, sculpture, metalwork and woodturning etc.

    Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary

    Located in north-eastern part of Bhutan, it encompasses an area of 1520 sq. km and forms an Eastern Himalayan Eco-region with wide range of eco-system ranging from warm cool broadleaved forest to Alpine meadows. Bumdeling is an annual migration place for black-necked cranes, which fly over from nearby Tibet to pass the winter months in a warmer climate. Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary is also a great place for butterflies and the only place in Bhutan where Ludlow's Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis ludlowi), the national butterfly, is found.
