Genekha Mushroom Festival

Location: Genekha, Thimphu

This two-day annual festival is held in picturesque village of Genekha, Thimphu during the month of August to promote locally produced mushroom. Supported by Tourism Council of Bhutan, Genekha Mushroom Festival is organised by Gewong (group of villages) administration and mushroom management group in collaboration with mushroom centre, Ministry of Agriculture & Forest (MOAF) & Department of Agriculture (DOA). Locally known as Sangay Shamu, Genekha village is famous for producing matsutake and chanterelle mushrooms.

The main objective of the festival is to create awareness on sustainable harvesting of local mushroom and enjoy its organic flavour. It is also during the festival when local community comes together to exhibit their native mushroom and other local produces while cultural program by village community and school children also showcased.
