Pemagatshel, meaning ‘Blissful Land of the Lotus’, is located in the south-eastern part of Bhutan. It shares its border with Trashigang district in the north and north- east, Mongar district in the north and north- west, Zhemgang district in the west, Samdrup Jongkhar district in the east and the Indian state of Assam in the south. 87.65% of the district area is under forest cover, comprising mainly of coniferous and broadleaf species. 

Pemagatshel district is also known for its local festivals and folk culture. The music of Bhutan is an integral part of its culture and most notable song in Pemagatshel is Ausa, which is sung during departure of family members, friends and relatives. 

The annual Pemagatshel Tshechu (festival) initiated in the district since the construction of its dzong in 1980s. The festival is held at dzong for three days during which various mask dances or Cham performed. These mask dances are believed to confer blessing upon the onlookers, provide them protection from misfortune and exorcise evil influences. The festival is a religious ceremony and there is strong belief that one gains merit just by attending it and witnessing religious mask dances and performances.    

For locals, the festival is also a most opportune time for social gathering, rejoice together with family and friends, all against the backdrop of colourful religious ceremony.
