Wangzhing Rabney Festival
Description
Season: September
Location: Wangzhing Lhakhang, Lhuntse
Every year, the village temple in Wangzhing hosts the Wangzhing Rabney festival, a cherished tradition deeply rooted in local folklore. Legend has it that Lam Gyalwa Lhanangpa, hailing from Sombrang Gonpa in Bumthang, subdued a malevolent demon at Dragong in Minjey, Lhuentse. Following the demon's defeat, Lam Gyalwa Lhanangpa bestowed blessings upon the people. In gratitude, the villagers offered land to the Lama, and thus Wangzhing, meaning "land for the blessing," was born. According to local elders, the Wangzhing Lhakhang was constructed by the renowned terton Pema Lingpa. It is said that during the consecration ceremony of the temple, neighboring communities gathered to receive empowerment (Wang) from Terton Pema Lingpa, who initiated various Tercham rituals, many of which are still observed today during the festival.
Wangzhing Rabney, translated as "the consecration ceremony of the newly constructed temple," commences with Nubcham, a ceremonial dance performed by the local community on the evening of the 24th day of the 7th month of the Bhutanese calendar. This day features the Gonpo and Gonmo dances as its highlights.
The second day showcases the Phag cham or Boar Dance, alongside treasure dances such as the Zhana mask dance and the dance depicting the 12 animals of the birth signs, along with other secretive performances.
The festival culminates with the Three Male Relatives Dance. According to local lore, during the temple's consecration ceremony, three individuals from a distant hamlet arrived late, only to find the ceremony nearing its end. Despite this, Terton Pema Lingpa honored them by having them conclude the sanctification ritual. This dance, performed by three male relatives, symbolizes that historic event, offering festival attendees the chance to witness this poignant tradition.
