Jambay Lhakhang Singye Cham
Description
Season: December
Location: Jambay Lhakhang, Choekhor valley, Bumthang
The Singye Cham (lion dance) is held at Jambay Lhakhang in Bumthang, once a year in the month of December. The main reason to perform this particular dance is to make an offering to the Singye (lion) that accompanied Jowo of Lhasa on the long journey from Tibet. According to this legend, the siblings Jowo of Lhasa, Jambay Lhakhang and Kyichu Lhakhang gather at Jambay Lhakhang during the festival on the fifteenth day of the tenth month of the Bhutanese calendar for an annual meeting. Honouring the travels of Jowo of Lhasa by lion and Kyichu Jowo by mythical horse, the Jowo of Jambay Lhakhang, makes an offering of gratitude through the performance of Singye Cham during the festival
